March Updates; Get ready for the eclipse

This new start to the year has already been so busy. Here are some quick updates about my artwork...

January started off strong with the opening of "Waffle Weave Invitational" at Summit Artspace in Akron Ohio. Artists from all over the united states submitted weavings that included a "Waffle" twill structure. This has been an idea in my brain for so long, and it was great to finally have it come together. My piece "Don't Tell Me" is made of wool, and 200 neon acrylic rods. In this work I'm really trying to open up what materials I can work with and still consider my work a "textile". You can still see the show for 2 more weekends, March 8/9, and 15/16. The website for the show has all the works and artists statements for each piece. https://www.summitartspace.org/waffle-weave-invitational/

Impressive Instant (Plaid Penumbra)- Wool, 18x24
This piece is another experiment that I have tried and failed at previously. This woven wool cloth was resisted with shabori-style stitches to create this circular shape. In response to the call for works for the Subtractica show at Troppus Projects in Kent, I wanted to create a work of art that combined geometric abstraction with my memories of experiencing the solar eclipse. I am impressed by how the over-dyeing with navy blue creates a depth in the cloth that doesn't exist on the surface. You can see Subtractica at Troppus Projects in Kent Ohio until the end of April. You can see a total solar eclipse in the rt.77 corridor on April 8th. https://troppusprojects.com/

And then this past week, I got to see the end result of another experimental process. I was accepted into the DayGlo art show at Waterloo Arts in Cleveland. I made this piece to have different levels of "glo" depending on the different materials in the piece. There is a fun combination of wool dyed with Rohdamine and Flavinine dyes, zip tyes, mason line, straws, and other things dipped in the DayGlo paint. It will be up at Waterloo Arts until March 30th. https://waterlooarts.org/2024-dayglo-show-how-does-your-garden-glo-march-1-30/
