June 2023

It's already June again?

Looking at this and realizing that I have not put out a new newsletter in a whole year.  That's probably because it has been more stressful and more exciting that I thought previously.  I went from living with family to being a person who owns (1/3 of ) a house! I have been doing a lot of things around here to make it more livable, and definitely more colorful.  I found that if I painted all the rooms different colors it really helps me know where I am in the space.  Should I be an interior designer? Probably not.  I joked that if I did designs for people the results would come back in 1-10 years.

Another project that felt like it took years was the ceiling for Patron Saint, a restaurant in Cleveland's “hingetown” neighborhood, between downtown and Ohio City.  Patron Saint is run by the wonderful Marie Artale who wanted to make patrons feel like they were sitting under the draped fabric she had experienced on the piazzas of Italy. After a lot of consultations with Heather from Oliver Architecture,  I had a plan and a purpose.

This diagram was the second of the plans to make the space look full of floating, colorful fabric with a lot of texture.

After 8 months of weaving and a lot of different orders to make sure I had the right color of orange, this was the result:

Later in June I got to teach a small 2 hour workshop called “experimental weaving” where me and lots of OAEA Art Teachers made some very interesting small tapestries.

I also learned how to enamel on copper using image transfers and other techniques!

That’s it for now! I’ll definitely try to make this more than a yearly endeavor.
