June
Opposites Attract

It’s June, and I’m ready to get back to creating full time. After a fun Professional day with our school district’s Arts Staff, summer has officially started. It’s time for me to switch gears from “teacher” to “artist” but it has been a challenge to get into that headspace. Thankfully I have a new project to work on that I am excited about. I was accepted to participate in the “Opposites Attract” exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh/ Museum Lab. This show is in conjunction with author Mo Willems’ book Opposites Attract which illustrates and starts conversations about pairs of antonyms.

For my piece I chose “Hard and Soft”. I was thinking about how it would be interesting to flip the idea of textiles being soft, and made a sample incorporating unconventional materials like plastic tape, trimmer line, and paper for the “hard” side, and really fuzzy things like wool roving for the “soft” side.

Now to make a bigger piece to share with the author by Tuesday…

I also had the chance to go to the Great Lakes Fiber Show at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. I may have bought too much yarn, but I also got things for free, took pictures of sheep, and spent time with other fiber friends.

In other news, I will have OPEN STUDIO for this month’s First Friday in Downtown Canton! Come and say hi! My studio is located in the Canton arts district at 318 Cleveland Ave NW, on the second floor in studio 207. I have new works from a recent show on the wall, and we have some new studios opening upstairs down the hall.

If you missed it, you can also still catch my group show “Unnatural Fibers” that will be up at Summit Artspace until June 25th. I also will have some pieces going up at Worthington Yards in Cleveland in a few weeks.
Will I finally weave some placemats this summer? Stay tuned!
